In Fall, 2012, I began sumi-e lessons as my 70th birthday present from my wife.  Although my prior painting experience was close to nil, my earlier life in Japan and exposure to traditional Japanese arts in general quickly kindled my interest in this exquisite ancient art form.  Also my many years of experience in Zen practice found its expression in this intuitive form of painting.  Equally important for me was experience of baby-sitting two grandsons who taught me to "just" paint as I had learned to "just" sit to meditate, with no expectations.
